In an impressive stride forward for Sri Lanka’s aviation industry, 2024 has been marked by a record-breaking increase in passenger, aircraft, and cargo movements, showcasing a significant recovery and growth since the challenges of the past years.

Soaring Numbers: A Testament to Resilience

The Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited (AASL) reported remarkable figures from the country’s key airports, including Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Jaffna International Airport (JIA), and Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA). These airports collectively surpassed the milestone of 8.8 million passenger movements, a testament to their pivotal role in the region’s connectivity.

Dr. Sumith de Silva, AASL’s Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, highlighted the outstanding statistics from 2024:

  • Passenger Movements: 8.88 million, an increase of 17.69%
  • Aircraft Movements: 56,289, marking a 20.69% rise
  • Cargo Movements: 192,498 metric tons, up by 21.13%

These figures not only reflect a robust recovery but also underscore the increasing importance of Sri Lanka as a central hub for travel and trade in the region.

Enhancing Global Connectivity

The increase in passenger traffic is attributed to various strategic initiatives aimed at boosting tourism and expanding airline services. In 2024, BIA hosted over 30 international airlines, including top-rated carriers such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines, contributing to a diversified and resilient aviation sector.

Notable airlines like Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines increased their flight frequencies, while others like Jetstar Asia and Red Wings Airlines expanded their networks to include new scheduled flights to and from Sri Lanka. This expansion has not only facilitated travel but also significantly bolstered the national economy by attracting a higher volume of tourists.

Commitment to Excellence

The AASL has continued its commitment to enhancing service standards and operational efficiency, ensuring a seamless and safe travel experience. This dedication is evident in the collaboration with airline partners and the rigorous adherence to safety protocols, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s reputation as a reliable aviation hub.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Sri Lanka’s Aviation

As the aviation sector continues to expand, the focus remains on sustainable growth and leveraging opportunities that enhance Sri Lanka’s connectivity and economic prospects. With ongoing improvements and strategic planning, the future looks promising for the nation’s airports and their contribution to global mobility.
