LOLC Advanced Technologies (LOLC AT), Australia, a subsidiary of LOLC AT in Sri Lanka, has announced a strategic partnership with Khalifa University of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi (Graphene Technology). This partnership follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in August 2023, formalizing the collaboration between Khalifa University’s Research & Innovation Centre for Graphene and 2D Materials (RIC2D) and LOLC AT, Australia.
Expanding Global Graphene Availability

This partnership is a major step toward increasing the global availability of graphene technology, which is based on high-quality graphite. Graphite is known for its exceptional strength, flexibility, and electrical conductivity, making it essential for the production of graphene. Graphene is used in a variety of high-tech industries, including advanced materials, electronics, and renewable energy solutions.
LOLC AT is also the parent company of Ceylon Graphene Technologies (CGT) in Sri Lanka, a leader in advanced materials. CGT was created through a partnership between the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) and LOLC Holdings PLC. Today, CGT is a top producer of high-quality graphene and, with this new collaboration, will be the primary supplier of materials to RIC2D. This partnership will combine the resources of LOLC AT in Sri Lanka and Australia to advance graphene production.(Graphene Technology)
Sri Lanka’s Unique Advantage in Graphene Industry

Manju Gunawardana, LOLC Group CEO of Research and Innovation, highlighted Sri Lanka’s unique position in the industry. “Sri Lanka is the only country in the world producing the highest quality graphite, known for its authenticity and unparalleled characteristics. Graphite is now one of the most valuable raw materials used across various industries. Our goal is to take the exceptional graphite we mine and convert it into high-quality graphene, providing the world with superior materials. This gives Sri Lanka a significant advantage in the global graphene market, allowing us to lead in innovative and high-quality production,” he said.(Graphene Technology)
Commercialization and Innovation in Abu Dhabi
As part of this partnership, RIC2D’s commercial arm, INTRATOMICS, will focus on commercializing cutting-edge graphene research. This includes building a state-of-the-art graphene production facility in Abu Dhabi, the first of its kind in the Middle East. RIC2D will manage the facility’s setup, cost management, and material testing, combining CGT’s technology with Khalifa University’s resources to enhance production.
Homaid Abdulla Al Shimmari, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Khalifa University, commented, “Our partnership with LOLC Advanced Technologies demonstrates our commitment to driving innovation in advanced materials. By joining forces, we aim to develop cutting-edge materials using graphene, which will support the UAE’s shift toward a more sustainable and diversified economy.”
Strengthening Global Presence
For LOLC AT, this partnership is a strategic expansion into the Middle East, solidifying its presence in the region. For Khalifa University, it aligns with their mission to promote technological innovation and support the UAE’s economic growth. This joint venture, combining Sri Lanka’s world-class graphite resources with Khalifa University’s research expertise, aims to set new standards in graphene production and commercialization, strengthening the region’s role in the global market.
